Abstract

Breast feeding is a complex phenomenon that has not been adequately investigated. This study was coducted to determine which factors distinguished between mothers who reported breast?fed from those who reported formula?fed or mixed type of feeding. And also investigated barrier factor which influenced breast feeding, and mother¢¥s need for successful breast feeding.
The subjects of this study were 1335 mothers of infant who lived in Seoul city. Data were collected by using structured questionnare and open ended questions.
Data were analyzed using SAS and content analysis.
The results of this study are as follows :
1. Of the 1335 subjects, 25%(N=339) reported that they fed their baby by breast milk.
2. The related factors(predictors) found to be associated with breast?feeding are include delivery type(X2=8.89, P=0.010), maternal education level(X2=22.03, P=0.001), mother¢¥s occupation(X2=51.36, P=0.000), family support(X2=10.18, P=0.006), infant¢¥s birth order(X2=23.50, P=0.001), and hospitalization during neonatal period(X2=14.39, P=0.001).
3. Mothers reported that the factors which were negatively influenced on breast?fed are `lack of milk¢¥, `mother¢¥s occupation¢¥, `illness of mother¢¥ and `illness and hospitalization of baby¢¥.
4. Mothers want to know about benefit of breast milk, and learn about breast massage and method for milk supply. And also they want to feed their baby as soon as possible at earaly postpartum period in the hospital.
